The UMP Strategic Plan 2016-2020 was announced to staff and students as a guide to navigate all UMP members to move forward towards achieving UMP’s Vision and Mission.

The event was attended by more than 5,000 university members. Also present were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Prof. Dato' Dr. Rosli Mohd. Yunus, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Mashitah Mohd. Yusoff, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dato' Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin and the President of the Student Representative Council, Madyasir Ahmad Basir.

The UMP Strategic Plan 2016-2020 is a continuation of the three previous UMP Strategic Plans implemented since the inception of the University in 2002. The UMP 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, themed "Generating Glory" is the fourth and final phase in realizing the latest vision, "A Distinguished Technological University".

The formulation of the UMP 2016-2020 Strategic Plan is in line with the 2015-2025  Malaysian Education Development Plan (Higher Education) launched by the Prime Minister Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak on 7 April 2015 which has 10 shifts in the effort to further strengthen the country’s higher education sector.

The Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) or Pelan Pembangunan Pendidikan Malaysia 2015-2025 (Pendidikan Tinggi) - PPPM 2015-2025 (PT), is a strategic document prepared by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (now fully monitored by the Ministry of Higher Education) and outlines the direction of the country's higher education for 11 years from 2015 to 2025. This is a continuation of the review of the National Higher Education Strategic Plan or Pelan Strategik Pengajian Tinggi Negara (PSPTN) 2007-2020 and the coordination of Preschool to Secondary Education, or Prasekolah hingga Pendidikan Lepas Menengah (PPPM) 2013-2025 aimed at enhancing and uplifting the nation's higher education system.

At the same time, the UMP Strategic Plan 2016-2020 is also aligned with the current agenda of the government, namely, the 1Malaysia Idea, the Government Transformation Program (GTP) of the National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) and the Ministerial Key Result Areas (MKRAs).

A reformation approach has been implemented by UMP in developing the UMP Strategic Plan 2016-2020, namely, the introduction to Strategic Leaps Replacing the University Key Result Areas (UKRAs) with the development of several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that combine the needs of PPPM (PT) performance shifts and the achievement of UMP strategic objectives. UMP has identified the following five (5) leaps for the implementation of the UMP Strategic Plan 2016-2020:

  1. Academic Prominence
  2. Financial Sustainability
  3. Research & Innovation Prominence
  4. Socioeconomic and Environmental Sustainability
  5. Brand Prominence
